Alastair began to develop an interest in music production when he was given a small Casio keyboard at the age of five. By age twelve he had acquired the Yamaha PSR 790 and PSS 520 keyboards which he would use to try and emulate his favourite Hip-Hop and Drum and Bass tunes. At age seventeen he was using the Yamaha keyboard with his Roland SP 808 sampler and Fostex FD4 multi-track recorder with which he taught himself about sampling, audio manipulation, basic multi-track recording and basic mixing. At this moment in time a PC was not included in his studio so all composition elements were played and recorded live into the sampler and looped by ear. Samples from the SP-808 were manually triggered and recorded onto the FD4 recorder. With only four tracks available, producing a song meant tracks had to be bounced many times over. This limitation taught him to achieve clean audio signal paths and helped him develop an acute ear for mixing.
While continuing to produce music from home, Alastair went on to study music technology at Reading College where he completed a National Diploma (Merit grade). This taught him about computer music production and MIDI sequencing, which inspired him to include a PC into his home studio.
Alastair then studied an Honours Degree in Sound Technology at Glamorgan University and achieved a 1st, after which he completed his MSc in Advanced Music Production and achieved a Distinction. He had a particular interest in Sound Design and did post production for an animation for his MSc project. He was also the Co-sound designer for the thirty minute comedy ‘Pleasure Park', which was shown on ITV Wales.
Alastair now works at Stanwell School as a Performing Arts Technician, where his job role is to handle the technical aspects of the Music and Drama departments. He also holds after school computer music classes where he teaches Stanwell pupils between the ages of twelve and sixteen. In addition to this, Alastair continues to do freelance work in music post production.
